What you're describing is just not how 2nd contracts work for starting qbs.

The history and record on this is very clear.

First if the guy is considered a starter that puts him in a certain slot (if not it's different).

2nd the amount for a starting qb 2nd contract is pretty much pre-determined and it does not matter who it is. There is some room for variation but not much.

3rd the amount goes up every year.

So in 2015 Wilson got 22 M, in 2017 Carr got 25 M, in 2018 Cousins got 28 M, and in 2019 Wentz and Goff got 32-33,5 M, in 2020 whoever gets one will get more.

4th. 2nd contracts are their own market and they are not done in comparison to 3rd and 4th etc. contracts from more established, veteran players.

5th. Your options are to pay the market amount OR let the guy walk. There's no such thing as getting a guy to come in for less...UNLESS you think he is not considered a true starter, then the entire thing is different.

It makes no sense to compare Goff's and Wentz's contracts to the contracts of other qbs. Usually variations in contract numbers tell you one thing and one thing only---it all has to do with the year a guy comes up. That's it.

3rd and 4th etc. contracts work differently--there can be more variation. Then you can get things like elite vets (Wilson for example) getting more than others, or you can get things like a qb deliberately settling for less because he has already cashed in and now he feels like he can give a hometown discount (Brady for example).

BTW this all means that within 2 years Goff's deal will look like a bargain.
