Gurley did an interview mid-season where he said he got hurt in week one and, after signing the big contract in the off-season, he "wanted to give the money back."
That really implies that whatever happened week one it was serious and career-threatening.
There was no injury. Something acted up on a surgical knee. And, no one has ever said this was career threatening. In fact, the knee issue from game 1 was not career threatening. You don't run for 9 or 10 more games after a CAREER THREATENING knee injury that isn't even treated (and it wasn't treated because there was no such injury). On top of which, teams are obligated to report such injuries, let along NOT RUN THE GUY for 9 or 10 more games after it.
So--since distinctions matter---this is important: he did not say he GOT hurt. He said he played hurt in that game. That's the difference between having some kind of actual injury from playing, and having an underlying condition that acts up.
In fact, the fact that he said that has long been part of the discussion of this issue. It has come up many times.
Here's the actual words.
Notice no one says TG "GOT HURT" in that game. He WAS hurt, he didn't GET hurt. He had pain and inflammation, and that comes from a different kind of thing.

from Left knee initially bothered Rams' Todd Gurley after season openerDec 27, 2018[

Gurley's knee also was an issue after a season-opening victory over the Oakland Raiders, when Gurley rushed for 108 yards and caught three passes for 39 yards and a touchdown.
"It was a similar situation," McVay said.Gurley said Thursday that he, "Felt like s---" after the Monday night game in Week 1.
"It was bad," Gurley said. "I was contemplating on giving the Rams back their money and everything. It was bad. It was real bad."
Again notice how everyone carefully avoids saying he GOT INJURED in that game. And. Why would they do THAT?
For example, no one says Cooper Kupp "had an issue with his knee," they say he INJURED it.
As I keep saying these distinctions matter.
