Josh Reynolds deserves larger role in 2019 - Article

February 15, 2019 11:14PM
Kupp is our slot, well as long as he is not injured, but wouldn’t mind seeing more 4WR sets with the emergencies of Reynolds. Can see him being more productive than either of our current TE’s. Anyway, just a thought

Josh Reynolds came up big for the Los Angeles Rams this past season when Cooper Kupp went down with a torn ACL.

During the 2018 season, it was devastating to see the Los Angeles Rams lose Cooper Kupp the way they did after the former Eastern Washington star suffered a torn ACL during Week 10 against the Seattle Seahawks.

After looking at a few minor injuries Kupp managed to overcome leading up to the this game, the Rams felt awful about the loss of their beloved wideout, although there was hope the offense would still be in tip-top shape since Josh Reynolds was ready to step up.

Similar to Kupp, Reynolds was selected in the middle of the NFL Draft back in 2016 (fourth round) following an impressive career at Texas A&M. And even though Reynolds didn’t always see as much action on the field as Kupp, the youngster has stepped up on numerous occasions over the last two seasons when needed, mostly due to one of his teammates dealing with an injury.

Normally, Sean McVay seems most comfortable running a three-receiver set, and seeing how it took Reynolds until Week 5 in 2018 just to record his first receptions shows how little he was used in the passing game before Kupp’s injury.

Along with Kupp, Los Angeles is fortunate enough to have two explosive receivers in Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods, making it easy to see why it was tough early on for Reynolds to get snaps.

However, after watching Reynolds finish the 2018 season with 29 catches for 402 yards to go along with five touchdowns from Week 5 on, this is the perfect example of what the wideout can bring to the table when given the opportunity.

Obviously, the No. 3 wideout job is Kupp’s to lose once he returns to full strength, and it’s highly unlikely Reynolds will ever be able to replace him since the two are on different levels. But with McVay’s reputation for being an offensive genius, the Rams coach needs to figure out some sort of way to make sure Reynolds has a larger role in 2019.

If this does happen with Reynolds, it’s only going to put the Rams in better position to make another run at the Super Bowl during the 2019 season, with hopefully better results than what took place earlier in February.
