Why not the 5 yards but replay of down?
If they didn't make defensive holding an automatic first down, then you would see DBs grabbing receivers ALL game long (especially when they know they are about to get beat for a big gain). Games would become a flagfest and scoring would decrease. The auto first down gives defenses "incentive" to play things as clean as possible.
I guess I get what you are saying. Although the offense would still get another try as they would get to replay the down.
