...but personally if he had a really good 2016 I'd have no problem franchising him again for 2017 if needed. That would be for $16.7M. I'd rather overpay for one year than hand out a massive 5-6 year deal. And he'd earn $30.6M over those two years so he might not be against the idea himself.. Just my opinion.
I think that two things are in play regarding TruJo this year, 93.
1) He must have an outstanding year with the Rams and remain relatively healthy while doing so. Otherwise, I think they will let him walk.
2) The Rams are meanwhile gonna attempt to get a read on their CB depth status. If a CB already on the roster really impresses, then TruJo becomes a bit more expendable if he can't be extended reasonably. I think that factored into their decisions to reluctantly allow Jenkins and McLeod to walk away.
The cap becomes increasingly restrictive as the upcoming contract renewals approach. Demoff simply must keep an eye on that with a long term strategy in mind. Gonna be excruciating to have to choose between retaining Brockers, Ogletree, or TruJo, for example.
But it might come to that. And sooner than we would like. Yeah, the cap is growing. But the top FA salaries seem to be growing even faster.
Our ability to keep filling the pipeline with good young talent will give us the ability to survive inevitable losses of quality players via FA. That's what the perennially winning teams have done. No other shortcuts with today's cap rules.
They extend the best of the best and harvest the future comp picks when they are forced to let other fan favorite players go.
A chess playing FO is worth it's weight in gold. No more room for checker playing FO's, anymore.
It's a tough business, that's for sure.
