the only similarity is they are done over a fire/heat..(When we have the Irish over from there or we go over there they'll say lets BBQ meaning lets grill out)...Grilling is done usually over charcoal or gas, BBQ, real BBQ is done over wood, a hard wood such as Cherry, mesquite etc. It's done over a very long period of time like pork will go 8-12 hours. It rotates on slabs of grill material. The smokey flavor is more attributed to the wood it's sitting on rather then the rub itself...The rub will influence to flavor and IMO there is no "sauce" put on BBQ, it should be more of a juice derived from the cooking off of the fat with a vinegar/cider vinegar base....Kinda like a French Ajus dipping for a beef sandwich.
