One of the best movies ever made IMO. True story of Jake LaMotta. Introduced me to the dishonesty in professional boxing. But like you I continued to follow it until I couldn't.
My favorite pro boxer of all time, for reasons I can't explain, was middleweight Kid Gavilon-middleweight champion in the early 50s. To me as a teenager he had great style and watching him box was like watching a great opera.
