they insist that Tyson was the greatest ever.... heavyweight that is. My guess is that most of you will agree since he was more of 'your' era.
I would choose one of 'my' era... which is no different than YOU except, I'd be right.
Well, actually...
That's true but I think I have more to go on than just 'my era'. Ali was fast... and not just 'fast' but otherworldly fast. IN HIS PRIME... if you choose the Ali of late in his career then no WAY does he best Tyson.
I don't think Tyson could have gotten to him.... ADD to that... one thing Ali is given almost no credit for was his ability to take a punch. Watch the left hook Ali took from Frazier in their first match and then just TRY to tell me he couldn't take a punch!
Frazier's punch as powerful as a Tyson punch? NO... I will agree with you there. But he would need to land it.
Tyson was NOT all power, I agree, the man could box, but he was mostly power. And he had NO patience. I stand by my assessment... Ali takes Tyson out not early but before it goes the distance. BOTH in their prime.
But that's Ali vs Tyson... are those two the best? Hmmmmmm, I'm not really sure.
I will give Tyson supporters this: Of the 'power' boxers I think he was the best, IN HIS PRIME... definitely not later. But I do NOT think a power fighter beats an 'elite' boxer... and there were many. NOT Marciano, in case you think I'm leaning "Italian".
Marciano was power... and half the size of Tyson. Ok, exaggeration, but not much.
Lewis and Holmes were fantastic 'boxers'.... and I did NOT care for Holmes... but the man was good.
Now lets introduce "era"... it matters. Taking 'era' into consideration I'm not sure any argument, (good argument), can be made against Joe Louis. Can't factor in the Marciano fight because Louis was LONG past his prime... even though I do think it would have been a close and fantastic match had both been IN their prime... still... I give the nod to Louis.
Long post... and it was all to say the following... I think one of the greatest ever was Joe Frazier. Unfortunately he fought Ali when Ali was IN his prime... and Ali WAS the best... but short of Ali... I think Frazier the best I ever saw.
