Bakersfield is as close to LA as I want to get. And I'm not that fond of Bakersfield. 
Just kidding LA and Bakersfield people... well, sort of.
I would 'guess' that both areas have fairly safe places. If you're in a major hotel I wouldn't worry. Now if you're in a motel with massage beds for .25ยข and there is a mirror over the bed.... well, you might want to consider another motel.
