I did lose a pet..

when I was a kid.. Had a Beagle (of course) name Snoopy (of course) who got out through a hole in the fence.. we never did find him.. I have wondered what happened to that dog since I was about 10 years old.. The local community really (eventually) got behind this story and some people really came through in the clutch.. the lady who hung flyers and the other lady who took in Nina the night she ran away are the big heroes.. Had she not taken her in, Nina would not have survived, imo.. I'm pretty confident about that.. She probably would have been run over on the highway, which was literally 30 feet away..
