Is it a given that a St. Louis expansion team would be in the NFL West? Maybe the NFL would like the idea of the Cardinals and the Rams playing St. Louis twice a year, but geographically one could make the case for NFC North (with Bears, Lions, Packers, and Vikings) or even the AFC South (Titans, Colts, Jags, and Texans).
The NFC West is obviously the traditional choice, but the NFL being what it is they will throw that out the window if there's more money to be made elsewhere.
Just curious: is there any talk of relocating a team to St. Louis rather than granting an expansion team?
As an aside, I suspect that if the league expands to St. Louis there will be another expansion team added someplace else at the same time. With 33 teams someone is getting a bye every week. This season all the bye weeks are clustered in weeks 6 thru 14 and my guess is the league would want to stick with that kind of schedule in the future.
Tampa Bay and Seattle were both added in 1976. Then both Jacksonville and Carolina were added in 1995. If the league expands it makes sense to me that they'd do a two-fer again.
