I didn't like "The Shining" at all. But I do like both Nicholson and Brando as actors. True, I have seen them in movies where I thought their performances were poor... but I have also seen them in movies in which they were masterful. I think that's true of many of the 'greats'.
The actor I like least that most consider 'great' would be Al Pacino. I put actors like him into the category of not being a great actor but being right for the part.
I've never seen Jimmy Stewart as anything less than brilliant... and this in some movies I did not like at all. Joan Plowright is like that for me... many of her movies I'm not at all fond of but she is never anything other than brilliant. I can watch those two, (and some other actors), and marvel at their performances and pay the actual movie no attention at all.
