Debatably, VERY debatably, Ginger was the first, (maybe one of the firsts), to bring the drums to center stage - that is: NON-drummers finally heard and recognized the drums. And when he did it exploded, like over night... suddenly drummers were "cool".
Before Ginger:
I remember, was it Dennis Wilson that was the drummer for the Beach Boys? Anyway... he was very popular but that was more because he was 'pretty'... not so much his drumming, (which wasn't bad, not saying that).
It's interesting that a lot of the great drummers from the late 60s era were originally jazz musicians.
I saw the 68 tour too, as I say in another post. I was 13 or 14.
