I follow those noise rules for bears. I’ve had many encounters that all ended very quickly and without incident. Although I have a friend who had to empty an entire can of bear spray to fend off a black bear in order to get back to his truck over a kilometre away. Some of the trails that I mountain bike have blind corners, so I tend to ramp up the volume in those spots. When my knees were better I used to run on trails quite regularly. It was normal to see bear scat on these runs. To be as conspicuous as possible I would yell and clap as I ran. One of the trails was along a lake popular with local anglers. There were a couple of times where I had men in their boats yelling at me to shut up because I was scaring the fish.
