The ladies in my home were flooding my living room with tears.
The Greatest Game Ever Played... yup, agreed, outstanding movie. Got time for a short Golf story?
We used to have a priest here that was a huge golf player/fan of the game. He had played with many of the pros from yesteryear, and he had played on nearly every famous golf course in the world. One Christmas I bought him a putter... I have found it in Oregon and it was made out of Myrtle Wood, solid. It became his favorite putter... NOT because he could best putt with it, however. It was the 'sound' it made.
He owned a set of persimmon clubs custom made especially for him by Harvey Penick. He added the myrtle wood putter to this set.... and only used them on special occasions. He was right, by the way....
the sound was amazing... sweet, soothing, organic.
I think it's tragic that today most golfers have never even heard the sound an actual 'wood' golf club makes... and I will always believe they should have NEVER allowed metal woods to be used for that one reason... the 'sound'... I don't CARE that metal woods drive the ball further... the 'sound' was worth preserving. - JamesJM
