Well, for guitarists..

tuning down means the strings are more 'slinky' because they are more loose.. I absolutely HATE it.. So, to counter it, you use fatter strings, but that's more difficult on my arthritic fingers... We only tune down a half step, but I couldn't even imagine tuning down a full step - or from E to D.. People who tune to C are insane.. sounds cool, but I couldn't play a guitar tuned that low.. I do have a pedal that drops your tuning - I would use that, instead..
