Yes you could see the fear and doubt on Hanks face throughout Greyhound. And yet the will to "carry on".
BTW: does he get back with the girl at the end or is that a remembrance of the beginning of the movie?
As you probably know the movie is based on the novel "The Good Shepherd" by C. S. Forester.I haven;t read the book but this is what someone says about all that:

In The Good Shepherd, Ernest was actually married prior to his service on the USS Keeling, but his wife left him because of his dedication to his duty.
