It's about the Battle of the Atlantic, but that's kind of in the background. The film's not a documentary.
The actual story is this. A career navy man gets his first command. It is commanding a destroyer escorting a convoy across the Atlantic in 1942. He gets this command through seniority only and has never commanded in combat. That early in the war, in 1942, it was impossible for air support to cover the entire trip. That leaves the convoy much more vulnerable. The dead zone where there could be no air support took a couple of days to cross. German wolf packs used to attack convoys in that dead zone.
The story works this way. Minus a brief flashback, it follows the hours faced by our hero as he escorts the convoy through the dead zone. He has to make decision after decision as the wolf pack attacks the convoy.
Thing after thing happens.
That's the story.
