Couldn't agree with you more that assigning a genre is TOUGH. I think the only easy one, even though even it is only semi-easy, is classical.
Most of my friends are NOT jazz fans.... when they think jazz they think 'saxophone'... completely reliant on the instrument. So that video I posted above of Golub and White wouldn't qualify as jazz for them, or rather what they would call jazz.
The most diverse, in usage, to me that is... is "Pop". I tend to think 'Pop' is just a catch-all for any music that doesn't fit into another niche.
