The point here is what is serious enough to shut things down.

If people get sick, and may have a long recovery time or possibly some lasting issues, BUT don't die, then shutting things down is probably not the best solution. How many people will have lasting issues because of the shutdown? Then it becomes a trade off.

These players want to play, and if fatality rate drops very low, they should be allowed to play.

You don't have to do some sort of morbid "I would rather have money flowing in the economy, what's a few hundred thousand sick people" calculation.

The solution is simple. Countries where people wore masks in public contained the virus. (That's along with social distancing where possible and the usual sanitation stuff like washing hands).

That includes Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Austria. Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Vietnam.

Places where most of the population wore masks had very low illness rates (let alone low death rates).

Places where they didn't wear masks or require social protocols saw high illness and death rates (Sweden).

Good news, bad news: Why aren’t spiking Covid cases in emerging hotspots crushing hospitals?

Rams43246June 23, 2020 11:29AM

Part of the matter is the definition of a "case" of Covid
