“If you really want to be in a situation where you want to be absolutely certain, you’d test all the players before the game,” Fauci said. “And you say, ‘Those who are infected: Sorry, you’re sidelined. Those who are free: Get in there and play.’”
What I saw in an interview about the NFL playing was not that. He was asked, "what would happen if 3 or 4 players tested positive? Would it be okay for the other players to play?" To which he responded, "if 3 or 4 of the players tested positive, the chances are many others are already infected but not testing positive as of yet and the game would have to be cancelled". What would then happen is the next 2 weeks would also be cancelled and if this only happened to 1 team, they might get away with it. But honestly, reality is, any team testing positive would compromise the season.
I could definitely see that. I didn't see the interview that you did, but I interpreted the comments in the article to be in the context that players/coaches/staff would be tested regularly enough to limit the spread of any infection.
I think that this is where the Las Vegas "bubble" idea may be a safer option.
