a piece of musical history , you're probably not all interested in.................lol
originally built like around 1923
on the shores of beautiful lake Okoboji , the original Roof Garden had two floors , a large dance floor upstairs
, with shops , arcades and other stores downstairs
it was actually one of the most popular dance halls in all the midwest back in the 1930's - 1950's , with famous bands as Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey , and even Lawerence Welk , who played there several times , in the 50's and 60's it started to transition over more to rock n roll , with the the Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Guess Who, the Shangri-Las and the Yardbirds are just a few examples
but by the time the 70's and 80's came around it fell into disrepair
by the time I got old enough to go to the Roof Garden , in the early 80's , it was kinda of a dump, still a fun place to go , as a high school kid , but the big concerts and famous bands , were a thing of the past
the only band I remember seeing there worth of any interest was a band called Chameleon , their points of interest was that the keyboard player was Yanni
anyone remember him ?
that , and their drummer at the time held the wolrd record for playing the drums upside down
they were based out of Minneapolis
anyways
in the mid 80's , the Roof Garden was torn down and nothing had been rebuilt there , where the Roof Garden used to stand is now what they call the Green Space , and is where all those out door concerts are held , thats where those photos of that Thunderstruck concert were taken
well....................
last year , they built a new Roof Garden in a different location , well kinda anyways , it looks the same from the out side, but the inside is totally different , instead of two floor , it's just one floor on the ground level , but now they can have events there all year round , instead of just the Summer months
it's pretty nice place ,..........................it's still not the same as the original was ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but what usually is
here is my mom , my aunt , and grandparents at the original Roof Garden back in the day
thats my mom in the back on the left ( thats not my dad sitting next to here ) my grandparents are the two in the back on the right , and my aunt next to them ,
and...........the new Roof Garden that opened last Summer
now they can have concerts all year round , and other events
but anyways , thats where we go now to see most of our shows now, and stuff
but there was alot of musical history in that old Roof Garden , like I said , that was one of the major hubs back in the 30's and 40's , for all the Midwest . all the big names wanted to play there as people from miles away would come
