Yesterday, my Wife and I watched it. I first saw it over 30 years ago and recall being bored then. I figured with maturity, I might get what it was all about. I found nothing scary about it AT ALL. My Wife, who does not do Horror flicks, was bored. The last hour of the movie is nothing but Shelley Duval running with a knife, being chased by Nicholson. We actually giggled when the kid started yelling "REDRUM" in a high pitched voice. I had heard in recent years that Duval almost had a nervous breakdown while filming. Some scenes were SO long and drawn out, I TOO would have a meltdown if Kubrick had me do them 50 times ,like he was well known for. I WILL say that the movie starts out well, with the feeling of isolation. But after an hour, it just got tedious.
