well, there kind of is now with electronics.
2 Drum Kits ago I first purchased "Roto-Toms", (mainly to save money BUT I did love them). Are you familiar with them? It's basically only the head, (no drum), set onto a 'screw' (of a sort), that you can spin to tighten or loosen the head. Difficult to use but I got 'semi' proficient with them and would often bend the tom notes when somewhat of a 'sustain' was possible. You grab the outside rim of the head and spin clockwise or counter-clockwise. In effect, you can spin to loosen the head, thereby toning the head down, lower in pitch, then strike the drum and then spin to tighten the head and raise the pitch... and vice versa. With acoustics they attempt this as well.. you've probably seen some drummers do this by placing a hand on the head to dampen it then strike the drum by loosen the pressure of your hand, or increasing pressure, to bend the pitch somewhat.
