I had two 'binge' workout era's in my life. One in the late 70's to mid-80's... the other from the early 90's to about 2014.
So lets go back to 1980. Or rather, late '79. Yeah, the Ram's first SB. I was young, I was fit.
I was running every day back then.... and THEN... 'mile' time did matter to me. This was before my backpacking days.
I was running approx. 6 minute miles. Not bad. lot of people 'claim' they ran a 6 minute mile... I don't think so.
So I was in shape... a workout-aholic. And up jumps..... the 1980 Winter Olympics. At the time I was capable of running around a 5:30 mile. but now the USA was to face the Soviets!
So I watched the first period... against all odds we were in the game... HOCKEY. I had not ran that day, yet... so at the end of the 1st period I said to myself, "if you can break 5 minutes the USA will win this game". And I put on my running shoes... and headed outside.
Without question I was more motivated that day than any other day in my workout history. I took off at a sprint.
I carried a stop watch with me... and when I finished the 'mile' I couldn't look... terrified. I came back in the house.. sat in front of the TV to watch the 2nd period of Hockey... before I looked at the stop watch.
4:54. I had done it. And our USA kids beat the Soviets. Went on to win the Gold Medal.
Thought about that today, on the treadmill... now barely able to walk a mile. It's mental, Frank... it's ALL mental.. you have to want, you have to believe, and if you can do that... the sky is the limit.
