He was captured by the Russians in WWII and spent 3 years in a gulag.. While there he contracted shingles and the Russians let him go home.. He was an officer, or they might have taken him out back and put a bullet in his head.. I dunno if they let him go because they were afraid he'd infect the whole camp - as far as I know its not contagious, but the Russians might not have known that..
