About 20 miles from my there is an abandoned air base, Eagle Field. It is where most pilots trained that flew in WWII. It was also the site of POW Camp, German.
There was also a golf course there that stayed open, oh, I'm going to say until 1980 or so. The base itself shut down shortly after the war.
I used to go out there exploring... the grounds were riddled with old WWII artifacts. Still are but harder to find these days. I believe there is a museum there now but only open by request.
I have a few of those artifacts put up somewhere... one in particular that was great.... a young airman and a young lady posing in front of one of the base buildings. I contacted the museum curators, some WWII Vets, and tried a few Internet sites to see if perhaps I could identify the couple in the photo - but no luck. - JamesJM
