I live in a town of about 104K people.. it hasn't grown in decades, because as soon as people get old enough to live on their own, they leave town.. Last year, very quietly, they got a bond passed to build two new high schools in town - at a cost of $238 million dollars.. the bond passed with 397 votes.. No, not 397 votes ahead of the "no" votes.. 397 TOTAL votes..
I went to a high school established in 1891.. The Wichita Falls High School Coyotes are THE most successful high school football team in Texas with SIX State Championships.. we are even more successful than Odessa Permian Panthers, from the movie Friday Night Lights, who we sent packing on more than one occasion in the playoffs..
So, some yahoos on the school board decided to shut down the WFHS building, and do away with the name, the Coyote mascot, and the tradition that is 130 years old.. They decided to let the students vote on the new mascots, and refused to list "Coyotes" on the list to choose from..
Needless to say, a whole buttload of people - including me - are SUPER pissed off about it and have started a petition to keep the Coyote legacy.. This whole cancel culture thing needs to be STOPPED before there are NO more traditions and legacies in this country.. So, in 5 days we almost have 5000 signatures, which is a LOT considering hoe many votes passed the bond.. We will meet with the school board in mid-January to present our case..
Amazingly, some people in town are laughing at us, saying we're wasting our time, peaked in high school and can't move on etc. and to let it go so they can start NEW traditions and legacies.. of what? Not knowing what sex you are or which bathroom to use? They haven't mounted a State Championship run in 21 years and they wanna start new traditions and legacies.. Sorry - had to vent..
Friendship is like peeing your pants.. Everybody can see it, but only you can feel the warmth..
