I can understand what we call hurricanes there -and yes that would be scary for the reasons you wrote. But a tsunami-that would be interesting given the depth of water on the ocean side. When we were there the weather was great until the very end when 20-30 ft surf was coming through the pass. But a friend of mine had been there a few years before and experienced the back end of a hurricane there. He said walking from Kia Ora toward the pass on that flat and low path (road?) was a little hairy.
