Waterfield... you near Monarch Beach Golf Links?

My grandson is there right now. Playing Golf and also working for that Podcast guy I mentioned some months ago.

He says it's incredible... beautiful. Actually, checking Google Earth, I think it's pretty far north of you? - JamesJM

I can relate to that.....

As you know I just got back from Death Valley.... and the most compelling aspect of Death Valley, (for me), was the 'mystery'. That said -

When I look out over the ocean from the beach, any beach, THAT is the greatest of all mysteries. The ocean draws you to it. However, it's also true that the ocean is my biggest fear. But it's not 'terror' I feel regarding the ocean... it DOES draw me towards it. It's a place I would love to explore but fear prevents it. You are the opposite, and I both admire and envy that.

Think I mentioned this before but my son was in the Coast Guard. Mostly they worked the coastline, seldom out further than 100 miles - - but on one of their missions they went to the middle of the pacific ocean to do maintenance on buoy. They stayed there... ( I guess anchored ).... for 3 days. For recreation they were allowed to jump overboard and swim for a while.

In Death Valley I took a couple 4X4 roads just to experience being 'alone', as close to 'alone' as one can get in the USA. It was great...but even alone in a canyon somewhere in the middle of Death Valley it does not compare to my son's visit to that buoy in the middle of the Pacific.

I think the 'fear' I have of the ocean is actually closer to being explained as 'respect'. I respect the power of Death Valley... but I have more respect for the ocean. I don't like the ocean more... it's not that... it's just that for whatever reason I have more respect for the power of the ocean. - JamesJM

I REALLY would like to go to the Savauge, like you did.. thevonly thing holding me back was lack of AC.. i know how ridiculous that sounds, but man, it was blistering hot when I went..

Apparently the pending tsunami in Oregon....

will be devastating. Now don't think I'm well educated on this, I'm not, but what little I have read indicates that the fault lying just offshore in Oregon is massive and when it goes, just a matter of time, yikes.

Most of the coastal towns in Oregon have evacuation routes clearly designated.

Some of the guesstimates about wave heights I've read say they could reach a half mile in height. If so I'm not sure I'm safe here in central Calif. at an elevation of about 165' and 80 miles from the ocean. Should a half mile high wave hit what's to stop it from entering the bay at SF and flooding the entire Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley?

Nope, not losing sleep over it but it's interesting to ponder. - JamesJM

But a tsunami-that would be interesting given the depth of water on the ocean side. When we were there the weather was great until the very end when 20-30 ft surf was coming through the pass. But a friend of mine had been there a few years before and experienced the back end of a hurricane there. He said walking from Kia Ora toward the pass on that flat and low path (road?) was a little hairy.

You've been there and know how absolutely helpless you'd be in a tsunami there.. I think at it's highest, it's 6 feet above sea level with 100 yards between the massive lagoon on one side and open ocean on the other with only one story structures and thousands of sharks surrounding it all.. We'd have been toast in a tsunami and my guess is they didnt wanna panic us, although I know me and I'd be digging it lol

I asked about the green fees and he said it's $200 to $300... which is less than I would have guessed.

About that area.... In Oregon, and Northern California, they have tsunami escape routes. I've never noticed that in the LA area BUT.... it could have EASILY escaped my attention. Do you have signs marking designated routes?

I seldom get south of Disneyland, :laughing , so I know little about that area. I'm always traveling on "Google Earth" and one of the great mysteries for me is that great expanse of mountains between 241 and 15. Looks very interesting, on Google Earth... especially the Black Canyon area. - JamesJM
