What you don't understand (& being from Fla I don't expect you to) it really has nothing to do with temp change, it's the freeze/ thaw, at 30 degrees your ground never froze.
I've saw freeze thaw destroy roads that where fine before hand in a matter of a few weeks, one minute you can drive fine, the next there's a hole in damn near big enough to set off your air bag.
I'd be willing to bet it'd take a pick axe to dig a hole in me or Iowa's yard right now, & winter just got here.
Detroit is probably the worst I've saw but I know there's worst.
