I began on Seminary Ridge, at Lee's statue, and walked across it to the angle... finishing at Lew Armistead's monument. Like you said... every step across I was amazed and how in the world those men would even attempt that charge. There is almost no coverage! A few shallow dips that would offer minimal protection at best. Enfilade cannon fire from both left and right as well as straight ahead. And if you survived the crossing it was hand to hand (bayonet) fighting.
I always found it fascinating that the day after Pickets Charge both armies stayed put but no fighting. Confederate began their retreat the night of the 4th day. - JamesJM
