My understanding of the B 17 ball turret, which is limited, didn't require entry/exit while on the ground.When the twin 50s are aimed down the hatch was accessible from inside. I've seen photos showing people entering on the ground that weren't dressed for combat. My guess is they are servicing the weapons.
