MamaRAMa has posted a couple of descriptions by now. Her descriptions are accurate, but a little subtle. The first episode I watched the guests broke out into a fight... full blown, fists thrown, pulling hair and punching fight. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, up to that point it was a more or less regular interview show, kind of like Donahue or Maury Povich. I really was fascinated by it.
The second show started with Springer interviewing a guy who was upset because his wife wanted to pose for a pictorial in Hustler magazine, and he didn't want her to. After Springer interviewed him a few minutes, they brought the wife out who was determined to do the pictorial. Then they brought a photographer out and she took off her robe and was wearing a bikini. At THAT point I was like... okay, this can't be real because what are they going to do, shoot a nude pictorial on network television?? Then sure enough, a fight broke out between the husband, photographer, and I don't remember if anyone else was on stage by then, but same scene as the show just the day before.
It was a little later, like a year or two, television was talking like the Jerry Springer show was staged. I was like, No DUH, Sherlock! I don't remember ever watching another episode, at leaast not another full one.
OH! I just remembered this... I actually worked with a guy who another co-worker told me was on one of those shows, I'm pretty sure it was Springer. He was a family member of the main participants. He didn't actually know anyone else on the show, it was all scripted and he said he did it just to be on television. He was kind of a different character, so seems like something he would do.
