A lot of the shows were FOS..

Guests on who lived their entire life in some closet - like they were cross dressers or rapists or murderers or had kids with someone else and their current significant others had no clue, so it was time to tell them - on national TV.. Lots of fist fights, lots of crying, lots of "why the F did you tell me on national TV instead of in privacy..?"

I think what started Springer down that road was the fight that broke out on Geraldo's show.. he had a Nazi dude and, i think, a Jewish guy on and the got into a chair swinging fight in which Geraldo was hit in the face.. I think Springer saw that as a model he wanted to present EVERY show..
