Great take, BR.
You basically already said it but the imbalance that Mayfield offers to a defense is what has been missing during the Stafford years. That puts a great amount of stress on the O Line—not easy trying to keep the dam from breaking which is what happens when the entire defense knows Stafford is ready to pass a majority of the time.
Is that the cause of all the injuries to the O Line this year—being over stressed and unable to heal from all the back pedaling and awkward landing spots when you lose your balance and land on a bunch of pot holes and hills of scattered bodies in the chaotic mess we call a pocket?
I think McVay should open up the competition this off season. Even if Stafford wins the starting role, he has a legit substitution waiting in the wings. That ought to keep him compliant for running McVay’s offense.
