The draft philosophy of drafting to win your division is sacrosanct. You’re going nowhere if you can’t win your division.
If you can’t beat a team in four years (ehem, the Niners), you’re a fool if you don’t draft to beat them.
Said this the other week. Unfortunately, we haven't drafted to beat the 49ers. We get rag-dolled by them. I feel like we've gone down the Spaggz role and draft a lot of four-pillars guys. Team captains. High character. And that's all great. But you gotta draft some throwbacks, too. Guys who wanna bite your knee caps off after their teeth get knocked out. I would have a hard time ascribing that trait to anyone on this squad. We just don't draft them. I watch the damn 49ers, and their team seems to be brimming with guys like that.
Now, I'm sure I'm going to get hit with some stat based blow-back. Cool. But until we beat that team, I really tend to brush that feedback off. We get pushed around by physical teams (not just the niners). Until we draft guys that don't get pushed around, it's just going to continue to happen.
Which leads to: Do we have the FO to get it done? I used to be a big Snead defender. Hey, he's the guy everyone copies. Delivered a Super Bowl. Looks cool on TV. Finagled so many plus side trades. But I hate his "obsession" with small fast guys, and that's what's built the team we have. Or risk injury picks. So often, we're the muscle car broken down on the side of the road, while the pick up just chugs along, working away.
And I understand our circumstances. How we are built. That we have to take the risk picks. Just seems we roll the bones on the little sparky guys rather than the Last Chance U bruisers. And we'll continue to get pushed around till that changes.
