Ben Johnson became the new OC and his focus was on empowering Goff to be his best. Johnson watched some of the good work Goff did in LA and incorporated what he was good at in the Lion's offensive scheme.
I think it could be stated as: the play calling plays to Goff's strengths. He's having Goff do what Goff was already good at doing, like play-action, and building on that.
Perhaps that's the approach McVay should have taken instead of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Understandably McVay wanted to more capable QB so he went and got Stafford, but the book isn't finished on Goff yet.
McVay didn't get a more capable QB; he wanted a differently capable QB, one who fit HIS - McVay's strengths - and he wanted a scapegoat when things went South. In two years Goff has gone from a micro-manager in McVay who supposedly insisted on tying his shoes for him to an OC who respected him enough to collaborate on the design of the offense, etc. Now, just like that, far from the Jared Goff who was a "slow processor" and whose success was only a function of McVay's QB-whispering genius, we see a Goff being praised for his ability to read defenses, get the OL into the correct reads, manipulate the defense w/his eyes. And, lo and behold, w/some deep threats at hand he can throw deep again! He's 6th in QBR, 7th in ranking, and getting pro bowl buzz again.
And, at 28, he's just hitting his prime. Imagine that.
We'll see whether Stafford of Goff will go down as the "more capable" QB. I'm betting on Goff.
I like Goff but I would take a bet that when all is said and done, by any OBJECTIVE MEASURE, Stafford will have had a much better career - I don't know if that is what you mean as more "capable" but if you had a number one pick on the board and your choice is Goff or Stafford - who do you take. To me its a no brainer - Stafford.
That said, I love watching Goff being successful because he is a good dude and Lions fans have suffered enough!
