I appreciate what Mayfield did and root for him the rest of the way. But unless Stafford is forced to retire he is the guy in 2023 and 2024. And I think all involved will know his status and intentions by, say, the end of January at the latest. It sounds like he should be alright in the longer term (camp in July).
And while it's clear the Rams should take steps to upgrade the QB2 spot and keeping Mayfield would be great there I don't see how any sort of $10M is viable at all. Wolford and Perkins combined are making $1.7M. Colt McCoy, just for example, carries a $2.5M cap number this year for ARZ. Could the Rams extend themselves to a $2.5-3M number for a good QB2? Sure. Beyond that I don't see it.
The best thing they can do for Stafford (beyond getting him healthy) is invest some FA money in an OL and draft an OL somewhere in the top 50-70 overall in April.
Stafford is, of course, the starter until or unless he’s physically unable. Everyone agrees on that, I think.
But I don’t think of Mayfield as a backup. I think of him as our future starter, possibly as soon as ‘23. So, in those terms, we are talking about a young and healthy 1st round caliber starting QB without costing a single draft pick!
Such opportunities don’t fall into one’s lap very often. It’s been since 1999 since Rams have had such a lucky break. Rams have gotta seize the moment here and find the money.
Where is AlbaNY to help us on backloaded type contracts for Mayfield?
