I know it’s uncomfortable to think of having to replace our beloved Matthew Stafford. Like everybody else, I just love the guy.
But his physical health may finally be in jeopardy. His wife’s concerns are legit.
Stafford may have already played his last snap or he may play for another 3 years. We all hope for the best for him but nobody really knows how this is gonna play out.
Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield has fallen into our lap. I’m not suggesting that Rams extend BM this afternoon since that Raider game was probably an outlier. But I AM suggesting that we all watch BM VERY carefully during these final 4 games.
If he plays well, including some amazing intangibles, then I think the Rams have to move mountains to get him extended. Don’t ignore a gift or such luck when it becomes available.
‘Settling’ for a future comp pick if BM looks like a franchise QB would be classic penny wise and pound foolish. Not that I’m too worried about Rams being timid if BM proves himself shortly.
A productive BM would be a nightmare for the rest of the NFC West for the next 10+ years, don’t you think? And without having to spend a single draft pick (unlike the 49ers)? Are you KIDDING me? Would be the coup of the decade!
Now, of course, it’s up to BM to show us what he can do. Fingers crossed.
Can't lob them in like that man.
I just don't trust Baker when things aren't going right. Thought he was overdrafted, and has really never done anything to disprove that. On top of that, are you going to pay him 10m to be a backup QB and ignore glaring holes on both sides of the ball? I can't do that.
I don't think Stafford is going anywhere anyhow, and when he does, I think McVay follows and surely AD. So at that point its a rebuild. And if a new HC is coming in, I want the OL fixed first and the new HC to pick HIS QB.
Just my 2 cents.
We just see this one far differently, Dead.
I’ve already mentioned that BM needs to consistently play well during these final 4 games. That would be 5 games of evidence. We’ve already seen what both Wolford and Perkins can do (or not do) despite having years in the McVay system.
So, yeah, I’m willing to take a $10M flyer on BM if he plays solidly in the remaining games. Stafford’s Ram future is very cloudy, so it’s just possible that BM could be the starter as soon as next season. Can you name me a better $10M backup QB option for Rams? Worst case is that BM would be a very good injury insurance policy.
Extending BM would just be a matter of money and creative contract structure. All of our picks would still be there for fixing OL, Edge, RB, etc, with or without BM. So a reload would still be very doable.
All due respect, but you’re putting the cart before the horse when speculating that Rams lose McVay and AD if Stafford retires. I don’t see that at all. Did you see that Ram locker room video after the Raider win? All Rams seemed excited about the ability to compete once again.
Honestly, I see extending BM as a no-lose proposition. If Stafford stays AND plays well then Rams have a quality QB ready on the bench and soaking up football nuggets from McVay and Stafford. A perfect learning environment, IOW.
If, for whatever reason, Stafford can’t play next year then Rams have an inexpensive and quality QB ready to go and keep themselves very competitive. Something that we definitely did NOT have this year.
More I think about it it seems like a no-brainer.
