If he doesn't know the routes cold, he won't play IMHO. Plus the blocks. Assignment driven. Maybe he won't learn every player's responsibility on O (like Stafford/Kupp) but he HAS to learn his assignment on any play that McVay calls.
There's a reason why the first pass he saw from Wolford wasn't until the 2nd preseason game. Skow and Tutu know the route trees, so they will play before Lance. And it's not trivial, learning every route in McVay's playbook.
But once he gets it (and it could take all year), I see him as potentially replacing Van Jefferson as our #3, as a starter. Certainly in the mix competing with Skow especially.
Several things…
1. McCutcheon looked pretty danged good with his routes in preseason and NOBODY was better at contested catches (a Stafford specialty).
2. Wolford only played one half of one ps game, the 2nd game, of course. So it’s not surprising that Wolford’s first pass to McCutcheon occurred at that time. Lol.
3. McCutcheon had to catch passes thrown by 2 backups and he still dominated. Can you imagine him catching passes from Stafford?
4. I think McCutcheon has earned the right to get a third of the snaps vs Bills along with Skow and Atwell and let the chips fall where they may. Each of these 3 WR’s has certain skills that the Bills may find very difficult to defend. Let ‘em all play and let’s see how it shakes out.
