WTH was McVay thinking?
All speculation on my part so take this with a grain of salt. But McVay's best offenses in Washington featured DJax as his speed WR and it seems to me that McVay has always tried to replicate that offense in LA. An offense, that is, with a speed WR that could threaten the defense deep on every play.
There have been a few WRs that have gotten a shot at that role in LA. Last year it was the original - DeSean Jackson - but only on a one year deal.
What I think McVay was thinking when the 2021 draft rolled around was that a speed WR was necessary to run his offense and that Tutu could red shirt his rookie year, learn the ropes from DJax, and take over that role in 2022. With that narrow focus I can kind of see how Tutu became a Ram.
But like many, I see a couple potential flaws in McVay's thought process.
First, McVay's offense looked different when DJax got released and Tutu got hurt, but different isn't necessarily worse and the O did pretty good even with both of them out. So maybe that world-class speed guy is nice to have, but not really a necessity.
Second, even if a speed WR is necessary it's quite possible that Tutu isn't the right guy for the role.
