First off you can get safeties well into most drafts. The guys who can range deep and play on the ball tend to go earlier, however the Rams have no problem developing their safeties so finding guys with the right tools is possible. Also they're the lowest paid group in FA. So to me it's just surprising that a guy who never really fit what the Rams were doing with him is still on the roster.
What this means, or the way I interpret it, is that the staff thinks he can play over the top. Which I think is nuts. Watch him when his cushion is encroached upon by wideouts and you see a guy who doesn't have the natural sense of positioning, it's almost like he panics irt when to flip his hips. He's not great at playing the ball in the air either. But for him to still be on the roster means the Rams see value in him.
Btw I think Rapp's a quality kid. I think he's a guy who will work and study hard, just seems like that type of dude to me from my easy chair. But he continues to feel like a non-fit in this defense and what makes this worse is Burgess is a little too meek to challenge for a key role on top of it. If the Rams think they can fix these things with coaching more power to them, but to me it just feels like clearing out a couple guys on that depth chart would have been the way to go.
What might be going on here is they figure a safety room overhaul is a bridge too far, given their resources this offseason. So go with it, keep coaching them up, and hope that either Rapp or Burgess make a major jump. It would be really nice to see that happen, and the Rams have been right about their players on more than one occasion, so I'm definitely in wait and see mode with this group and with my fingers crossed even though I feel like they need some fresh blood.
