Hekker had a really poor 2020. He did. And he wasn't very good the first half of 2021, really. But he did rebound and was good the rest of the way and through the postseason.
I think it became simply a cost-benefit issue with him. His cap number and percentage of team cap just was out of line with his contribution. He was, again, and is still good. But I don't think he is a top-3 punter anymore and he was being paid as a top guy. Their "team build," as Jourdan and others discuss, demands that they get an inexpensive punter again for a few years. And with the Draft deep at that spot the timing was right.
All the best to Hekker in Carolina.
