TJ Watt is currently the highest paid defensive player in the NFL at a tad over $28M a year. Suppose AD wants to reclaim the title with a 3 year, $87M extension? The Rams could roll in the remaining $76.5M from his current contract and structure the new 6 year, $163.5M deal as shown below.
Watt got a $35.6M signing bonus so maybe AD gets $40M? Also, Stafford has a $26M 'option bonus' in year 2 of his deal - maybe they do that with AD, too, let's say $25M so the math is easy?
2022 $2M salary + $8M prorated signing bonus = $10M cap hit (a savings of $16.75M!!!)
2023 $2M salary + $8M prorated signing bonus + $5M prorated option bonus = $15M cap hit (a savings of $8.5M!!!)
2024 $20M salary + $8M prorated signing bonus + $5M prorated option bonus = $33M cap hit
2025 $21M salary + $8M prorated signing bonus + $5M prorated option bonus = $34M cap hit
2026 $25M salary + $8M prorated signing bonus + $5M prorated option bonus = $38M cap hit
2027 $28.5M salary + $5M prorated option bonus = $33.5M cap hit
Guarantee $89M and all the guaranteed money is paid in three years. Then if AD retires after the 2024 season the Rams have $31M in dead money in 2025 (which would actually be a $3M cap savings).
