IMO, what was predictable was that the players were going to continue to get more and more aggressive until the refs finally started to throw flags. Can you blame them?
I personally think it stinks that in the SB "they are going to let the players play" mentality exists. By the 4th quarter, both defenses were mugging the receivers on just about every play. Kupp was grossly held on every play so they moved him off the line to give him a little space before being mauled. The Bengals were rightly surprised when they finally started calling holding because it had gotten so gross they couldn't not call it. It's time for the NFL to ref the SB like it refs all games throughout the year.
