Giving a coach a 10 year contract is nuts. Where has that ever worked out?
No one can look 10 years into the future. People change. Especially when you are talking about a person as young as McVay who isn't married yet, has no kids yet. Circumstances change as well.
Giving a coach a 5 year deal is the longest that should ever happen and you only do that when there's also a way to protect yourself. In fact, I doubt that a 10 year deal would be of interest to either party.
Might McVay deserve a raise? Might he deserve a new contract (or extend his current one)? It would be hard to argue against.
When was the last time we saw such a 36 year old HC? Already possessing an enviable 5 year resume?
MCVay is special and therefore I think worthy of special contract considerations.
Kroenke is gonna pay the man. Only question is how much and in two 5 year contracts or just one 10 year contract by which time McVay will be barely 46 years old. If I’m Kroenke the security and longevity would be worth quite a bit to me.
Two things that NFL teams do NOT want to have to deal with.
Needing a quality HC when few to none are available.
And needing a quality QB when few to none are available.
Kroenke is in a position to avoid both of those scenarios for at least 5 more years if he so chooses.
We’ve all seen our Rams when without one, or both in the recent past. Nobody wants to risk going back to those days if it’s avoidable, right?
I rest my case.
