I just don't agree with the notion that this is how he plays, nothing can be done. Which was the same problem with Goff. We KNOW that both of these guys are capable of playing at their high levels. I don't think it's unreasonable to hold them to their own standards. When the chips are down and it's time to play at a high level, they both often do just that. So, we know they are capable.
So why the lapses? I think it's on the QB. There is something they are doing or not doing that they aren't performing at their capacity. This Rams team, for years, has been so good that the QB has every opportunity to not have to force things. There just isn't much excuse for being careless with the ball. Whether it's forcing it into coverage, not protecting it on a sack or whatever.
As much as I hate Brady, those are his greatest strengths. He is patient and smart. Stafford needs to realize that he can never hit a 5 run HR. Three strikeouts and a late solo HR is not as good as four doubles. Up to a point, I gave Stafford some slack for getting off to the hot start and being spoiled by all the success on big plays. To continue the baseball analogies, it's kind of like when guys go into the HR derby at the all-star game. Sometimes it takes a while for them to get their normal swing back.
But after that 3 game skid, I think Stafford needs to adjust his mindset. It isn't acceptable to chuck a ball deep into triple coverage. If it isn't there, then find an alternative. That is entirely within any QB's potential. It should not be considered a special trait for a QB to have just a little discretion. You're not going to complete 100% of your passes and not every pass is worth attempting. You can play that way and still be aggressive.
