My dad-a Canadian-not only served in WW 2 but he was killed during the conflict while serving his new country. You don't need to tell me about "risks". OTOH his service to this country was out of his believe in personal obligation to others including his navy mates along with the citizens of this country and other countries fighting totalitarianism. It's not a battle between "personal freedom" and "obligations" to others. They both co-exist. I have the "freedom" to buy any car I can afford but I have an "obligation" not to drive it in a manner so as to endanger others. We once had a viral infection that caused nerve damage that would lead to partial or full paralysis. Like the present virus many infected people did not show any any symptoms. It was called "Polio". Because it could be transmitted by physical contact we eradicated it for the most part simply by everyone becoming vaccinated. We stopped an horrific epidemic out our collective sense of an obligation not just to ourselves but to others. My dad volunteered and was killed in the war born from a sense of an obligation. I can recall my mother explaining to me (5 yrs old) that he had joined because he owed it to his own homeland as well as the fact he was now a citizen of the USA. If it was only about "personal freedom" he could have stayed in Canada and opted out of serving. If he had it would certainly have been better for him, his family, and particularly me. It is my sincere belief that one does not ever arrive at genuine "personal freedom" without a moral compass that also points to an obligation to others. Otherwise it's simply called selfishness.
