But I don't think that people have valued these rights less and are only now caring about them. I think that people didn't feel those rights were being threatened to the extent that they now do. Which, the water analogy, doesn't really compare. People seemingly being more thirsty now than they were in the past is different than people feeling like something is being threatened or taken away.
